Over 130 ago the Louisiana SPCA was created to combat the mistreatment of horses and mules in New Orleans. 127 years later Hurricane Katrina forever changed the course of animal welfare. Our first location was on Japonica Street, but was destroyed and deemed a total loss by Hurricane Katrina. We successfully evacuated 263 animals from the Japonica Street shelter for Hurricane Katrina. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, with the help of hundreds of volunteers and animal welfare colleagues, the organization led the largest animal rescue operation in the history of the United States. As a result, we worked out of a temporary shelter in a warehouse for a whole year during the aftermath of Katrina
